Accelerating biogas productivity and adoption with AnCoD pilots

13 June 2025
Focus area: Waste
Program stream: Sustainability
Project number: 2024-1003 (A)

This project was undertaken to support the red meat processing industry's pilot investigation into enhancing biogas productivity through anaerobic co-digestion. Dozens of co-located off-site and on-site organic wastes were used to produce biogas, which can be used to power operations and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

To help processors trial this pilot process safely and effectively at a larger scale, the project designed, built, and delivered two automated pilot-scale digesters, each holding 400 litres.

The outcome of this project now enters stage 2, providing the industry with practical outcomes to further reduce technical risk, regulatory burden, support knowledge sharing, and bring the red meat sector closer to adopting integrated waste-to-energy technologies that improve sustainability and lower costs.
