LEAP4Beef - Striploin chining pre-production cell accuracy improvements

10 June 2025
Focus area: Hands-off processing
Program stream: Advanced manufacturing
Project number: 2025-1045

This research project focused on improving the accuracy of the striploin chine removal cell through enhanced cameras, automated calibration, flexible robot paths, and CNN-based data feedback, resulting in measurable yield gains compared to manual processing. Trials with 714 striploins demonstrated improved precision, simplified data collection, and a minor yield improvement equating to an estimated $1.44 per head, supporting a 2.3-year payback period. The findings justify the development of a standalone prototype machine, which could deliver significant labour savings, safety improvements, and efficiency benefits to the Australasian beef processing industry.
