China (and other) meat product and carton labelling validation – Stage 1 Evaluation of possible RFID

30 October 2020
Focus area: Digitisation
Program stream: Advanced manufacturing
Project number: 2020-1031
AMPC worked with RAMP and an Australian red meat processing plant to evaluate possible radio frequency identification devices (RFID) solutions.

As part of this project, the capability of UHF RFID technology for the use on meat products was assessed. The technology was trialed using an RFID tunnel reader. Cartons of primals were placed on a moving platform that passed through the tunnel.

Cartons that were moved through the tunnel at a speed of 0.5m/s achieved consistent read rates of over 90 per cent. These results have shown that UHF RFID is suitable for use on meat products.
