15 August 2022
Focus area: Hands-off processing
Program stream: Advanced manufacturing
Project number: 2018-1031
AMPC partnered with the Danish Meat Research Institute (DMRI) to adapt, build, validate and demonstrate an existing pig bung handling technology in sheep and Australian processing operations. DMRI also looked a developing a process and tool to automatically cut free the bung.

The trials determined that bung handling equipment used for pigs could be adapted for sheep processing. It was run at an Australian processing plant while obtaining hygienic improvements.

For the bung cutting process, a new method and tool was developed and was able to cut the bung free automatically.
