Last month, AMPC service provider Tessele Consultants toured the Europe Union (EU) to look at innovative bioresource recovery technologies, with a focus on those showcased at the IFAT trade fair and through site visits facilitated by Evo Environmental Technologies.
The study included an assessment of the latest advancements in bioresource recovery technologies, an evaluation of their suitability within Australian, a review of EU case studies, and actionable recommendations for the industry.
AMPC Program Manager Matthew Deegan said, “The Australian red meat processing industry is at a critical stage, facing mounting pressure to address environmental sustainability concerns while maintaining economic competitiveness.”
“This research was initiated in response to the industry's need to find innovative solutions that can reduce waste, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance resource efficiency.”
Technologies including anaerobic digestion for biogas production, nutrient recovery processes, and the recovery of food-grade bioCO2 from biogas, were compared against current practices in the Australian red meat processing industry.
Tessele Consultants Founder Fabiana Tessele said, “The findings from the tour highlight significant opportunities for technology transfer and adaptation in Australia.”
“Adopting these technologies could produce a range of benefits for processers including reduced waste, lower energy consumption, and new revenue streams from renewable energy and recycled by-products.”
Key recommendations from this study include prioritising the adoption of waste-to-energy technologies, developing industry-specific guidelines for integrating bioresources recovery technologies, and encouraging collaboration between industry stakeholders and investors to accelerate the new business models and funding arrangements that will support adoption of these innovations.
The high-level comparison of Australian and EU practices revealed gaps in the support for Australian industry’s adoption approach, particularly in the areas of energy recovery and waste management, which could be addressed through EU technologies and business models.
